Motorcycle Crash Facts in Arizona

In terms of weather, there is no better place to be than the Valley of the Sun from November through March. Similarly, from May through September, it’s hard to find a better place than the mountains of Arizona.

Many people enjoy Arizona’s cool weather and cloudless skies by motorcycling. However, as we have pointed out previously here and here, riding a motorcycle can be dangerous.

Here are a few motorcycle crash facts from Arizona in 2012:

  • There were a total of 4,969,620 vehicles registered in Arizona of which 170,160 (3.4%) were motorcycles.
  • There were a total of 196,630 vehicles involved in crashes in Arizona of which 3,274 (1.7%) were motorcycles.
  • There were a total of 33,729 drivers injured in crashes in Arizona of which 2,544 (7.5%) were motorcycle drivers.
  • There were a total of 475 drivers killed in crashes in Arizona of which 129 (27%) were motorcycle drivers.
  • Of the 3,274 motorcycles involved in crashes in Arizona in 2012, 1,580 (48.3%) of the operators were determined to have NOT acted improperly.
  • Saturday is the peak day for motorcycle crashes
  • The hour between 6 PM and 7 PM is the peak time for motorcycle crashes

As you can see from the statistics above, motorcycles are less likely to be involved in crashes based on the ratio of motorcycles registered to all other vehicles, but as is obvious, when a motorcycle is involved in a crash the results are much more devastating for the riders as there is a much higher rate of injury and even death for motorcycle operators.

Most importantly, in almost half of all motorcycle related crashes, the motorcycle operator it was determined that the motorcycle operator did not engage in any improper action. Thus, motorcyclists should be cautious about the other unaware and distracted drivers.
